First Los Angeles – Montreal Flight for the R66
For the first time, a Robinson R66 landed on the Quebec ground on April 26, 2011.
Patrick Lafleur, chief instructor at Passport Helico, and myself are back from the first R66 flight from Los Angeles to Montreal. The trip took 22 hours, with an average speed of 117 kts.
Needless to say, we were really looking forward this flight. Ever since its announcement in 2007, the R66 Turbine has made the news, and now we could finally discover it for ourselves.
The R66 bears a striking resemblance to the R44. Same length, same dashboard, same shape: you can tell right away it’s a Robinson. However, with a cabin 8’’ wider, an 18 cu. ft. baggage trunk and 300 HP Roll-Royce turbine, it’s definitely something else!
A few quick facts:
- While the R44 has an average speed of 105 kts, the R66 easily delivers an extra 10 kts. In addition, the R66 offers 910 lbs available weight capacity (maximum weight, minus empty weight with a full gas tank), as opposed to the R44’s 675 lbs. Now, there’s a real 4-place helicopter with room for luggage.
- The R66 requires 85 liters of fuel per hour, compared to the R44’s 60 liters. However, because the Jet Blue fuel is cheaper than the 100 ll, there’s very little difference in the actual fuel consumption cost. Actually, a St-Hubert / Quebec City flight will cost the same!
- We can hardly wait for the aircraft’s Canadian certification to be complete. The one made available to us for the R66 Quebec Tour was certified by its manufacturer, Robinson.

Join the 2011 HS Rally
This year’s HS Rally will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2011. Takeoff will be at the Sorel heliport, followed by a race throughout the Eastern Townships, landing in a local inn.

R66 Demo Day Hosted at Passport Helico
This activity will take place in Mascouche, on June 10, 2011, from 9AM to noon.
After the R66 presentation (9AM to 10:30AM), we’ll be offering test flights to those interested. Test flights will require payment, but all money will be donated to the Children’s Wish Foundation.
